<p>In 1970 Florino Baggio broke down when Italy lost the semi-final of the world championship game against Brazil. Roberto Baggio, Florio’s three year old son, comforted his father with the words “Don’t worry Dad. One day I will beat Brazil. I will win the world championship for you.” Twenty four years later, Roberto Baggio led the broken Italian football team all the way to the final of the world cup against Brazil. In the penalty shootout, Baggio kicked and the ball soared over the goal. Italy went into mourning. “I could have killed myself that day and not felt a thing,” Baggio said later in an interview. Today he is a farmer and a buddhist.</p><p>In the art exhibition VÍTI, Guðmundur Einar researches iconic moments from penalty shootouts. He creates digital paintings from well known images which have appeared through the ether, prints them on cotton paper, and paints over them with watercolours. The digital is thus transformed through craft and handwork; living moments become dreams. Thus craftsmanship meets the multiple, the digital and the organic in a playful meditation on the gap between reality and poetry, cruelty and romance.</p><p>Heavy steps, a nation on your shoulders. Anguish or ecstasy. Heaven or hell. The noise is deafening. You step forward. Walk slowly to the ball, pick it up, lay it on the the grass. Heart pounding. You try to breathe. Í dag er hann bóndi og búddisti.</p><div><br><div>Í myndlistarsýningunni VÍTI rannsakar Guðmundur Einar íkonísk augnablik úr vítaspyrnukeppnum. Hann vinnur stafræn málverk úr þekktum myndum sem birst hafa á öldum ljósvakans, prentar þær á bómullarpappír og málar með vatnslitum. Hið stafræna umbreytist þannig með handverki og handavinnu; lifandi augnablikin breytast í drauma. Þannig mætist handverkið og fjölfeldið, hið stafræna og hið organíska í gáskafullri hugleiðingu um skilin milli raunveruleika og ljóðs, grimmdar og rómantíkur.</div><div><br></div><div>Þung skref, þjóð á herðum. <p>The life of a goalie is shaped by the fact that they can not make mistakes; they are too costly. Except in a penalty. There the goalkeeper is just a thing. Yann Sommer is a hero in his home country, where he ensured the Swiss their best performance in international football. It’s apparent in the body language of the ecstatic heroes - the man who became the champion of his nation, the boy who became the hero of the school ground. All around, his friends run behind him and celebrate with him sincerely. Beauty.&nbsp;</p><p>//</p><p>Líf markvarða mótast af því að þeir mega ekki gera mistök, þau eru of dýr. Nema í vító. Sviss - Sommer

<p>Andreas Möller scored the goal which brought the Germans to the final of the the Euros in 1996 - and crushed the hearts of the English on their home turf. The pose which Möllers body adopted in his exaltation lasted for just a moment, but is burned into the minds of most who have seen it; as the clearest expression of the brash pride of the victorious. “I have no idea why I stood in this position. It was a reflex.” Möller’s instincts took over, his body took this position by itself. It is possible to look endlessly at his Spartan body, where the animal expression of strength reigns, but also contains dangerous ideas of national pride and domination, the sincere joy of a child who scores a victory goal at recess; a flash of the brightest alongside the darkest… which lasts only a second before his teammates surround him.&nbsp;</p><p>//</p><p>Andreas Möller skoraði markið sem kom Þjóðverjum í úrslitaleik EM ’96 - og kramdi hjörtu Englendinga á heimavelli. Pósan sem líkami Möllers tók á sig í fagnaðarlátunum entist aðeins í augnablik en hún er brennd í huga flestra þeirra sem hafa séð hana; sem hreinasta tjáning groddalegs stolts hins sigursæla. “Ég hef enga hugmynd um afhverju ég fór í þessa stöðu. Þetta var viðbragð.”  Eðlisávísun Möllers tók yfir, líkaminn fór sjálfur í þessa stöðu. <p>The embrace of Claudio Taffarel and Gianluca Pagliuca (or as I called him as a kid Galíúga Palíúga) is the first image which I made and the source of the exhibition. The carefree joy of the goalies directly before the big moment shows how penalty shootouts effect them differently than they do other players: they can be villains, but they can also be heroes. There seemed to be respect, even friendship, between the goalies, and in their touch the boyishness of sport is sealed. Or what? Is there something else there? I have certainly thought about that for a long time.&nbsp;</p><p>//</p><p>Faðmlag Claudio Taffarel og Gianluca Pagliuca (eða eins og ég kallaði hann í æsku: Galíúga Palíúga) var fyrsta myndin sem ég gerði og þar með uppspretta sýningarinnar. Kæruleysisleg gleði markvarðanna áður en kemur að stóra augnablikina sýnir hvernig vítakeppnir hafa ólík áhrif á þá heldur en útileikmennina: þeir geta ekki orðið skúrkar en þeir geta orðið hetjur. Það virðist ríkja virðing, allt að því vinátta, milli markvarðanna og í snertingu þeirra kjarnast drengskapur í íþróttum. Eða hvað? Býr eitthvað annað að baki? Taffarel & Pagliuca

<div><span>The English were eliminated from the 1996 football world cup when Gareth Southgate botched a penalty shot. “It’s all in a fog” he said shortly after. “I don’t know how I got from the penalty spot to the changing rooms. I just wanted to crawl away… and disappear.” His friends watched. Disappointed. Hurt. Angry. Not with Southgate, but with fate, which betrayed them once again. Southgate was alone, until the coach Terry Venables comforted the young man.&nbsp;</span></div><div>//</div><div><br></div><div><span>Englendingar féllu úr leik á EM ’96, þegar Gareth Southgate klúðraði víti. “Þetta er allt í móðu,” sagði hann skömmu síðar. “Ég veit ekki hvernig ég komst frá vítapunktinum í búningsklefann. England ‘96

<p>In 2010 Ghana had the opportunity to be the first African nation to make it to the semi-finals of the football world cup with a victory over Uruguay. All of Africa was watching when the ball arced towards the goal in the final minutes of overtime. But then Luis Suárez, the Uruguayan striker, resorted to deliberately using his hand to obstruct the ball on the goal-line. Suárez was sent off with a red card and Ghana was awarded a penalty shot.</p><p>Asamoah Gyan, the highest scoring African player at the world cup, stepped up to the penalty spot. He took the shot, and struck the crossbar. “I failed my country. I failed the whole continent.” Gyan offered to take the penalty in the penalty shootout which followed, he needed to make up for the mistake. Gyan scored, but it wasn’t enough. Ghana was eliminated and Gyan and his teammates completely fell apart. A few years later Gyan said: “This game causes me pain every time I am alone.”&nbsp;</p><p><span>//</span><br></p><p>Árið 2010 gat Ghana orðið fyrsta Afríkuþjóðin til að komast í undanúrslit HM með sigri á Úrúgvæ. Is it just weak characters who falter under pressure? Or is it simply their technical ability that matters? He chose three technically outstanding, young players to take the penalty - inexperienced and cold from the bench. In a tournament which could rewrite his history and salvage his reputation. The three players all failed at the task and English dreams were broken once again. <p><span>Most young football players have dreamed of some day playing in the football world cup final. How would it feel to be the reason that your teammates return home from the tournament empty handed, with broken dreams.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>How would it feel to try again, and fail again, only a few years later? Terry Venables, the coach of the English national football team, undoubtedly had cause to consider this question when Stuart Pearce asked to take a penalty shot in the semi-final of the football world cup in 1996. Pearce had bungled a penalty shot resulting in the English being eliminated from the world cup six years earlier, and thus crushed the heart of the nation. The story goes that Venables answered with the question “Are you fucking sure?” But Pearce was sure, there was something deep inside him that needed to make amends for his past failure.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>When Peace stepped up, the crowd in Wembley fell into an electrified silence. They knew Pearce’s history. He describes the walk to the ball as endless.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>When the ball finally sang in the net, Stuart Pearce’s face was distorted in extreme, animalistic jubilation - a living embodiment of The Scream.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>//</span></p><p><span>Flestir ungir knattspyrnumenn hafa látið sig dreyma um úrslitaleik HM.
