The script, however, asks for production techniques similar to those developed by Antonin Artaud in the Theater of Cruelty: it is, in short, an examination of the human body as seen from the perspective of contemporary capitalist society, seen, in effect, as a prison.Tarek Ali Hassan was a rare example of an artist-scientist: an Egyptian endocrinologist who was a professor of medicine and chief of endocrinology at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, as well as a composer, musician, writer, painter, playwright and philosopher. A very nice, bright copy; wraps with slight losses at spine, stray spots.This work engages with a contemporary scholarly as to whether nuns were walled-in alive as a form of torture during the Spanish Inquisition. There had been reports of such activities in newspapers and books, while the church and authorities maintained denial that the practice ever took place. Holland uses these existing arguments in this book, compiling and reprinting passages to add to his position that nuns were, indeed, walled in or immured. Through investigative journalism and historical research, Holland’s argument of these nuns’ grim fate proves to be an intriguing read; weighing historical accounts, myths, and poetry. A-Z12 (Z12 a blank, Q6 signed Q9, X3 signed H3): 276 leaves. 5 1/2 x 3 in. Title-page with woodcut device, 26 woodcuts, decorated initials, printer’s ornaments, side-notes. Binding slightly shrunken, tailband broken but binding intact, minor stray soiling.First published in 1521, this work is an important example of macaronic verse, a satirical and synthetic mixture of languages, using hybrid words and a pastiche of Latin and vernacular Italian. The author, Teofilo Folengo, a Benedictine monk, was the best representative of the genre. His masterpiece Baldus, collected here, is a poem in macaronic hexameters, and was published under the pseudonym Merlin Cocai. In addition to Baldus, the work includes the parodic Zanitonella love poetry and the fable Moschaea, about a battle between flying ants. Satirical throughout, the work bordered on sacrilege when it addressed the topic of the clergy.The experience from Folengo’s traveling life makes his poems one of the most important source books on contemporary life and customs. His work, and macaronic poetry more broadly, enjoyed great popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries in Italy and beyond. First two leaves loose, marginal chips, old bookseller's annotations to title-page, minor foxing.Despite the year on the title (in fact a section-title), this work was first published in 1696 as part of Pecuniae obediunt Omnia. Money Masters All, attributed by Wing to L. Meriton — likely Luke Meriton, son of George. The present copy is from the second edition of 1698. Meriton's volume was a group of satirical poems "shewing the power and influence of money over all arts," as well as the present work.John Oldham was a poet and satirist, whose work — though little-remembered today — was admired in his time, including by Charles Sedley, the Earl of Rochester, the Earl of Dorset, and most significantly John Dryden, who composed an elegy upon his death. His poems imitated the classical Satires of Juvenal, and his translation of Juvenal saw publication after his death. This scathing prose satire presents a priest so grotesque that he sleeps with his ears tied around the top of his head like a nightcap.The grandson of a famous anti-papist, and son of a Protestant preacher, Oldham turned his wit against many of his contemporaries — perhaps most avowedly against the Jesuit community. He died at the age of 30 from smallpox.
