Beste spent seven years photographing the Norwegian black metal community, a notoriously secretive musical subculture which emerged in Norway in the 1990s as a rejection of the mainstream, and a return to the worship of the ancient Norse gods.&nbsp;This photograph depicts the drummer of Satyricon and 1349 adorned in typical corpse paint makeup as he glares in the mirror.&nbsp; Beste and his camera can be seen on the right hand of the frame, an interesting glimpse inside Beste’s process of documenting the secluded group.&nbsp;Condition as described in catalogue note. Matted, framed, and glazed to 18 ½ x 17 ½ in.Johan insists this is Slim Gaillard, despite questions and protestations among the rest of us. If so, this is an attractive shot of the legendary jazzman, rarely seen on the bass. Gaillard, a multi-instrumentalist, performer, and clown of the highest order, was well known for his comedic vocalese in his invented language, "Vout-o-Reenee." An accomplished musician, her performed in the bands of some of jazz's greatest musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, and more. His invented language served as an inspiration for Kerouac and other early Beat writers, and he is depicted in On the Road.Condition as described in catalogue note. Griffin, a tenor saxophonist, was a master of hard-bop. A notable bandleader in his own right, responsible for over 40 studio albums, he also played in some of the greatest jazz bands of the periods — he succeeded John Coltrane in Monk's Five Spot quartet, to name just one.
