Seventy-five unused Grateful Dead backstage passes spanning more than a decade of touring — from 1983 through 1995 — from the personal collection of Lawrence “Ram Rod” Shurtliff, the band's beloved head roadie and one of the most revered figures in the Dead's extended family. Ram Rod joined the Grateful Dead organization in the late 1960s and remained a central presence for the rest of the band's career, his loyalty and steadiness earning him an almost mythological status among Deadheads and crew alike. Items from his personal archive carry a provenance of the highest order — these passes were not sold, traded, or distributed. A rare and deeply personal set of artifacts from the Grateful Dead's legendary September 1978 concerts at the Giza Plateau in Egypt, from the collection of Bill “Kidd” Candelario — one of the Dead's most trusted and long-serving road crew members, and later President of Grateful Dead Merchandising. The lot includes two items: first, Candelario's personal all-areas Egypt backstage laminate, with his passport photograph laminated on the reverse alongside his legal name “William Candelario” and passport number — the kind of credentialing required for a production of that international scale. Second, Candelario's original golden Grateful Dead Egypt concert program from the Giza shows, held in front of the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids.
