As an artist he works primarily as a painter and printmaker. Born in Astoria, Oregon, he grew up in Orange County, CA., attended UCLA as an art major and graduated from UC Riverside in Zoology. He was the Curator/Director of the Santa Cruz City Museum of Natural History from 1969-98. 24 in x 20 inRoy and Frances Rydell arrived in Santa Cruz in 1947 from Hollywood, California, drawn by its rural beauty. Roy, an architect and artist, and Frances, an animal lover, bought the old Oceanview School in Bonny Doon, which they restored, expanded, and filled with their varied creative interests. They became active in the community, supporting organizations such as the Santa Cruz Museum of Art &amp; History where Roy was a key fundraiser in the mid-1980s. The Rydells were also early advocates of the Community Foundation and in 1985, started our first donor advised fund. Understanding the importance of a permanent resource for visual artists, they established the Roy and Frances Visual Arts Fund through which they facilitated grants to a variety of local arts organizations.&nbsp;Generously Donated by The Estate of Harry and Mary Blanchard

Roy Rydell Painting

Santa Cruz-based artist David Kimball Anderso (b. 1946), has been a practicing studio artist since 1969. Anderson attended the San Francisco Art Institute in the late sixties and focused studies with Bruce Nauman and James Reineking. Anderson is the recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts Individual Fellowships, a Pollack-Krasner Foundation Grant, a John Michael Kohler Arts in Industry Residency Grant and he was the sole recipient of the SECA Award from the San Francisco museum of Modern Art in 1973. Anderson began his exhibition career with a one-person show at the Berkeley Art Center in 1972 followed by another solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1973. In 1975 he was included in the Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. His first solo exhibition in New York occurred in 1978 with the Braunstein/Thorpe/Kind collective space at 139 Spring Street. David Kimball Anderson Sculpture

Mattie Leeds has been making pottery full time for 42 years. He studied classical Chinese painting with Y.C. Chaing, a master of Chinese arts, and he studied pottery with Michael Frimkiss, a renowned potter and student of Peter Voulkos. Mattie has worked out of the same studio in the Santa Cruz mountains for more than 40 years. His work is bold, colorful and expressive. The pieces are large—many over 5 feet tall, and the sheer volume of their surfaces gives him a freedom that the two dimensional surface of a canvas lacks. The bold figurative schemes dance around a surface that has no beginning and no end, but is a continuous statement as the viewer circles the object. Like free-standing sculpture, every side is lucious. Some of the pots speak of the 10 years he spent studying Chinese painting and calligraphy, while others are a montage of figures and design, merging colors and emotion.&nbsp;Generously Donated by The Estate of Mary and Harry BlanchardBuyers are responsible for shipping costs, and quotes will be provided upon purchase.

Ann Elizabeth Thiermann, MFA in Drawing &amp; Painting, is a classically trained landscape, portrait and mural artist painting both on location and in her Santa Cruz studio. Her pastel and acrylic paintings from California and abroad provide the visual resources for her murals and hang as fine art in national and international collections. Her paintings have received Best of Show, Grants, and her graduate thesis, mixed media of pastel and acrylic, was published in American Artist. Her commissioned portraits hang in law and CPA offices; capture artists in the act of creation, and children at play.&nbsp;Generously Donated by The Estate of Harry and Mary Blanchard

Surfer, sailor, and watercolor painter Dave McGuire was a guiding force in the development of the Cabrillo College art department. An outspoken and passionate supporter of community colleges, art instruction and students, Dave was responsible for attracting many of Cabrillo’s leading art teachers. Dave chaired the art department multiple times during his 30-year career at Cabrillo. Towards the end of his time at Cabrillo, he came up with the idea of leading watercolor enthusiasts on painting workshops at far-flung locales including Greece, Turkey, Portugal and Mexico.&nbsp;Generously Donated by The Estate of Harry and Mary Blanchard

Bruce Nicholson is a Santa Cruz watercolorist. For decades he and his wife Linda have been great supporters of the MAH as well as many cultural non profits in Santa Cruz County.
