London designer Vivian Westwood's partner Malcolm McLaren was briefly the Dolls manager. He dressed them in red patent leather and designed a backdrop for the stage that Johansen's girlfriend Cyrinda Foxx (Kathleen Hetzekian) stayed up all night sewing - a red banner with a hammer and sickle. The Dolls left for Florida the next day and after a few shows imploded when Thunders’ and Nolan's cravings for heroin made them hurry back to New York City.</div><div><br></div>

By 1972, during the “Glitter Rock” scene led by The NewYork Dolls and Wayne County, he started photographing bands at Max’s Kansas City, The Mercer Arts Center, Coventry &amp; Club 82. Throughout the mid 1970s Paul photographed most of his friends - artists such Blondie, the Ramones, Patti Smith, Heartbreakers, Talking Heads and Suicide to name just a few.&nbsp;</div><div><br></div><div>Debbie Harry / CBGB Men’s Room 1975 16 x 20&nbsp;</div><div>Just down the street from CBGB was Debbie and Chris’s Bowery loft, with its spare room allocated for an intimidating mountain of clothes, shoes, and wigs. Before leaving the loft they would dive in and fish out whatever wasn’t too linty, wrinkled, or ripped to wear. But it was the birth of punk, so sometimes they chose whatever was the most linty, wrinkled and ripped! I don't remember what brought us down into the CBGB men's room that night, but it was certainly not to use the facilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;</div><p></p>

I photographed Arturo sitting in his loft during the photo shoot for the new five-piece Blondie. I had asked him if I could do the shoot there because all his walls were painted white.</div><div><br></div>

Though he was quiet as a mouse and shy and giggly, when he did speak he’d be witty and funny, joking around or making really clever off the cuff comments. We used to listen to records in my room, and when the Ramones first went to England Joey brought me back some great British pub rock records by Dr. Feelgood and Joe Strummer’s band, the 101ers. Maybe the best thing about being a part of this scene was having people who liked what you did, or wore, or played, gravitate towards you and show you the kind the love that really means something. To get that, and be able to return it, is very, very special.</div><div><br></div>
