The poster notes ‘Instruction in Sitar-Tabla-Sarod-Flute’ and ‘Ravi Shankar Will Conduct General Music in Indian Music–Open To All Students’.In 1962, Ravi Shankar founded the Kinnara School of Music in Mumbai, India, with the aim of perpetuating the traditional guru-shishya method of Indian classical music education he had been taught by his own teacher, Allauddin Khan. Shankar’s growing influence in the West led to the opening of a second Kinnara branch in Los Angeles in May 1967. This new center aimed to share the sacred essence of Indian music with American audiences, and serve as a base for teaching the intricate techniques and philosophies of this ancient art form.At Kinnara, Shankar delegated much of the day-to-day teaching to trusted disciples, as his international concert schedule demanded much of his time. The school came to global prominence when Beatles guitarist George Harrison studied sitar under Shankar and Shambhu Das in Mumbai in late 1966. Harrison’s association with Shankar further amplified the appeal of Indian music in the West. In August 1967, Harrison joined Shankar at a press conference at the Los Angeles school, generating buzz for Shankar’s Hollywood Bowl performance. Other notable students of Kinnara included Robby Krieger and John Densmore of The Doors, Russ Titelman, and Colin Walcott. Footage of both the Mumbai and Los Angeles branches was featured in Howard Worth’s acclaimed 1971 documentary Raga.By 1969, disillusioned with the Los Angeles school, Shankar handed over its operations to his disciple Das Gupta. He continued to teach and inspire Western musicians through guest lectureships and academic positions, including roles at the City College of New York and UCLA. Very good.&nbsp;Poster promoting an Army of Lovers, a 1979 film by Rosa von Praunheim. Mostly shot in San Francisco, the film documents the wave of gay activism in the United States after the Stonewall riots in 1969 and before the onset of the AIDS epidemic.&nbsp;The film famously concerns the internal politics and fractures of the gay liberation movement, at first strengthened in a united front against the widespread homophobic Anita-Bryant-style hysteria, and then fractured into factions, self-interest groups, gay rights groups, anti-promiscuity activists, and so on.&nbsp;The film was distributed in the US by Other Cinema, an experimental film institution in San Francisco.Condition as described in catalogue note.
