Mühleisen was known for her shocking, transgressive performances in which she would bare herself naked on stage, paint her genitals red, and feign intercourse. Her focus was on the politics of the body, sex, and gender.Between 1976 and 1985, Wühleisen was part of the Austrian Friedrichshof collective, a left libertarian radical collective movement that became better known as a cult. Wühleisen left due to its ironically authoritarian demands that every member have sex with each other and that children be separated from their parents. Founder Otto Muehl was eventually accused and imprisoned for the sexual abuse of children.These first poster promotes Narcissus, a one woman show by Wencke Mühleisen at the Liljevalchs gallery in Stockholm under the name Grevinnan Sophink [Countess Sophink]. The poster promotes Mühleisen’s scandalous performances, promising that she returns to Denmark to further damage her reputation.The second poster promotes a performance by Wencke Mühleisen at the Liljevalchs gallery in Stockholm, produced by Cirkus I Stan [Circus in Town], in late May and early June of 1981.“She wants to defeat Logos. Original poster offset printed on recto only in a dark black green yellow on white paper. 22 x 18 in., framed 24 x 20 in. Closed tear (~1/2 in.) on top edge, (1/4 in.) closed tear to left edge.The rare "1% Free" poster produced by The Diggers — San Francisco’s mid-sixties radical anarchist performance troupe and mutual aid organization, whose nonconformist militancy was influenced by the 17th century agrarian socialist organization of the same name. The Diggers combined radical community action, including a free store and free food in Golden Gate Park, with street theater, happenings, and pranks.This evocative image, which later appeared on the back of the Digger Papers, was taken from a turn-of-the-century photograph by Arnold Genthe of two Chinese Tong men in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake. The faces and hands of the figures in this print were designed by Stanley Mouse, and incorporated into the poster by Mike McKibbon. Inspired in part by the Hells Angels, the 1% Free slogan was intentionally ambiguous; fearmongers at one point falsely suggested that it was evidence of a tithe instituted by the Diggers on the businesses of Haight-Ashbury. The more common interpretation indicated that the Diggers were part of a small segment of society that was actually free. Though this slogan and graphic featured prominently at several of the later Diggers happenings, the poster is a scarce artifact from the influential group.Condition as described in catalogue note. Bright, clean examples.Crump’s “Doper Posters” were some of his most popular designs from the 1950s. The present copy of "Smoke Marijuana" is signed by the artist in black marker, and is accompanied by "Cocaine Candy," along with one handbill not from this series: "You Too Can Be Wanted / Be a Bandit."Featuring tongue-in-cheek humor, they brought Crump’s signature wit to a somewhat crass subject.Crump was a Disney imagineer and assistant animator on several classic films such as Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, and Sleeping Beauty.
