Throughout the 1970s, the Living Theatre performed The Legacy of Cain in several nontraditional venues around the world, from a Pittsburgh steel mill to a Brazilian prison and the streets of Palermo, Italy. These plays were designed not only for a variety of venues, but a variety of audiences, especially those who would otherwise have limited access to theater.The printed version of the poster differs slightly from the pencil mock-up. Mühleisen was known for her shocking, transgressive performances in which she would bare herself naked on stage, paint her genitals red, and feign intercourse. Her focus was on the politics of the body, sex, and gender.Between 1976 and 1985, Wühleisen was part of the Austrian Friedrichshof collective, a left libertarian radical collective movement that became better known as a cult. Wühleisen left due to its ironically authoritarian demands that every member have sex with each other and that children be separated from their parents. Founder Otto Muehl was eventually accused and imprisoned for the sexual abuse of children.These first poster promotes Narcissus, a one woman show by Wencke Mühleisen at the Liljevalchs gallery in Stockholm under the name Grevinnan Sophink [Countess Sophink].
