The script, however, asks for production techniques similar to those developed by Antonin Artaud in the Theater of Cruelty: it is, in short, an examination of the human body as seen from the perspective of contemporary capitalist society, seen, in effect, as a prison.Tarek Ali Hassan was a rare example of an artist-scientist: an Egyptian endocrinologist who was a professor of medicine and chief of endocrinology at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, as well as a composer, musician, writer, painter, playwright and philosopher. He was knighted by the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the French government's official recognition for artistic achievement. A good, presentable copy; hinge weakened, some shelfwear.The magnum opus of the Gabriel Pomerand (b. 1925 – d. 1972), a poet and artist whose brief star waxed under the sign of the Lettrist movement in the 1950s.In this book, Pomerand uses the techniques of lettrism to translate his poems into graphic scores: a "bilingual" text, each page features his dynamic illustrated signs on one page, with the poems in French on the opposite page. Deriving his technique from memories of "old grimoires and luxurious incunabulums," Pomerand created what is, to our minds, one of the great intermedia works of the century. It is a moving expression of the great flowerings of avant-garde culture in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.Pomerand's introduction, translated by M. A very nice, bright copy; wraps with slight losses at spine, stray spots.This work engages with a contemporary scholarly as to whether nuns were walled-in alive as a form of torture during the Spanish Inquisition. There had been reports of such activities in newspapers and books, while the church and authorities maintained denial that the practice ever took place. Holland uses these existing arguments in this book, compiling and reprinting passages to add to his position that nuns were, indeed, walled in or immured. Through investigative journalism and historical research, Holland’s argument of these nuns’ grim fate proves to be an intriguing read; weighing historical accounts, myths, and poetry.
