First two leaves loose, marginal chips, old bookseller's annotations to title-page, minor foxing.Despite the year on the title (in fact a section-title), this work was first published in 1696 as part of Pecuniae obediunt Omnia. Money Masters All, attributed by Wing to L. Meriton — likely Luke Meriton, son of George. The present copy is from the second edition of 1698. Meriton's volume was a group of satirical poems "shewing the power and influence of money over all arts," as well as the present work.John Oldham was a poet and satirist, whose work — though little-remembered today — was admired in his time, including by Charles Sedley, the Earl of Rochester, the Earl of Dorset, and most significantly John Dryden, who composed an elegy upon his death. His poems imitated the classical Satires of Juvenal, and his translation of Juvenal saw publication after his death. This scathing prose satire presents a priest so grotesque that he sleeps with his ears tied around the top of his head like a nightcap.The grandson of a famous anti-papist, and son of a Protestant preacher, Oldham turned his wit against many of his contemporaries — perhaps most avowedly against the Jesuit community. He died at the age of 30 from smallpox.
