These two volumes contain 132 poems, constituting a significant portion of Sun Ra’s published literary works.Volume I was widely distributed and more commonly seen; members of the Arkestra often sold copies at performances in several different editions over the years. The present edition was published in 1985 and includes 28 poems, along with photography by Donna Paul and Allan Tannenbaum. It is one of the more illustrated examples we have seen.Published in 1972 (the same year as the first edition of Vol. I), the extremely rare Extensions Out: The Immeasurable Equation Vol. II saw far less distribution. This massive, sprawling artists' publication by Jorgen Nash and Malvin was published in the aftermath of the destruction of the Situationist commune at the Uddeboda Center, which was associated with the second Situationist International (otherwise known as the Bauhaus Situationiste). Mordet på Ubbeboda Center is a mythic avant-garde work among devotees of the Situationists, with approximately 700 pages featuring serigraphs, multiple paper-sizes, inserts, and documentation of artworks, events, and symposia held a the Uddeboda Center. In multiple languages, the book documents the international scenw hich circulated around the commune and its members. Included with this work si a stapled pamphlet with information regarding the work in Swedish.Exceedingly rare. We can trace only two copies in the auction records, and this work is uncommonly seen in the trade. A bit shaken, minor soiling to rear board, corners bumped.The Master and Margarita is one of the essential works of Soviet satire. Bulgakov wrote the novel between 1928 and 1940, restarting it many times before his death in 1940. A heavily censored version was first published in Moscow Magazine in 1967. The first official publication of the uncensored text arrived in 1989 and would not have been possible without the distribution of samizdat printings such as this one.While samizdat were initially produced by hand or typewriter, this copy was printed using a computer and captures the fascinating juncture of Soviet dissident practices and digital technology. Beginning in the late 1970s, during the early days of computing, employees at institutions in the Soviet Union managed to print banned texts using line (or drum) printers, usually during night shifts as the use of duplication technology was tightly controlled by the state. By the 1980s, such printers produced text at a rate of several hundred lines per minute. Text-block just barely starting to detach, corners lightly bumped.&nbsp;First edition of Ed Wood's rare cult novel Killer in Drag, featuring the author's alter ego, the character Glen/Glenda, a cross-dressing assassin whose ravishing beauty and musical voice bewitch every male in sight.Glen is a hired assassin who becomes Glenda when it's time to get down to wok, and is impeccably attired in either gender. Trouble follows Glenda when she decides to give up the murder racket, take up a sugar daddy, and finance a sex change operation. An early sexploitation classic.Ed Wood was an American screenwriter, director, producer, actor, author, and editor. In the 1950s, Wood made a number of cheap genre films, now enjoyed for their technical errors, unsophisticated special effects, large amounts of ill-fitting stock footage, idiosyncratic dialogue, eccentric casts, and outlandish plot elements, although his flair for showmanship gave his projects at least a modicum of critical success.Wood's popularity waned soon after his biggest "name" actress, Béla Lugosi, died. He was able to salvage a salable feature from Lugosi's last moments on film, but his career declined thereafter. Toward the end of his life, Wood made pornographic movies and wrote pulp crime, horror, and sex novels. His infamy began two years after his death, when he was awarded a Golden Turkey Award as Worst Director of All Time. Besides these four, we have traced no additional ESP catalogs in institutional holdings or in the trade.ESP was a key actor in bringing free jazz to the larger jazz world, releasing records by Albert Ayler, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, and Milford Graves. Originally founded by Bernard Stollman as a label to promote the Esperanto language, ESP promptly shifted course after Stollman heard Ayler play at the Baby Grand Bar in 1964: the avant-garde saxophonist's landmark record Spiritual Unity was the label’s second release.Often a source of frustration and fury for the musicians who worked with him due to meager or nonexistent payments, Stollman was guided by an attractive and liberating philosophy: “the artists alone decide what you will hear on their ESP-DISK.” As such, while the label was not particularly profitable, its output gained outsized influence and achieved remarkable contemporary resonance. Stollman eventually expanded the label’s range, releasing records in other avant-garde traditions, including proto-noise band The Godz and Ed Sanders’ band The Fugs.“All of the sounds in this catalog have one thing in common . . . . . Located in San Francisco's Fillmore district, the church was a community and mutual aid hub, with connections to the Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton, among other Bay Area community organizations.
