Signed and inscribed “To Jack (Welpott), my mentor, Hans.” Photobook documenting the “Jesus freaks” of early 1970s Berkeley, California.Levi writes, "I have a deep fascination with the participants, their fastidious pronouncements, and the events which they bring about, particularly the events of confrontation. Tempers erupt as the "reborn Christian" (many who are professed ex-drug addicts, ex-radicals, or ex-flower children) tell the gathered that eternal doom is their fate unless they repent. Often attempts are made to drown out their words with music or staccato chants by the ever present heckler. But these new Christians endure and persist. Scholars tend to dismiss their search for purity and certainty within fundamentalist religion as an unwillingness or inability to come to grips with real social problems. I do not choose to be judge of their motivation or sincerity. I have come to know many of the people in these pictures they want to know why I photograph and I want to know why they are 'Jesus Freaks.' Wraps lightly bumped.Book featuring an annotated collection of New York cop memorabilia known as "challenge coins," offering a look inside a culture usually kept unseen. The coins often valorize and congratulate aggressive and disturbing police practices and worldviews. The book was published by Research and Destroy New York City, a radical zine collective producing DIY publications at the intersection of art and abolishing the police. Through a research-oriented practice and a rigorous application of what they call a "photocopy-scamming praxis," they aim to raise critical awareness of how the police suck and are bad.&nbsp;"There are many stories about the origin of challenge coins, all probably apocryphal. What is certain, though, is their roots in American military culture, their rise in popularity after World War II, and their eventual adoption by law enforcement over the proceeding decades. When fellow service members or officers meet for the first time, they might “challenge” each other to show their unit’s or division’s coin as a way to verify that the other is not, in colloquial terms, a poser.
